Through the use of plasma technology first used by NASA to test heat shields, garbage landfills are finding ways to turn trash into gas.

By heating the garbage to extreme temperatures, the trash is vaporized and reduced to nothing but but a small rock, while the gas that is expelled is turned into energy.
