Over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into floodwater. Typically these automobiles get swept downstream, people are unable to escape, and they drown.

In an attempt to make important facts about floods more well-known, the National Weather Service has created a campaign called 'Turn Around, Don't Drown.'

When heavy rain affects your area, the National Weather Service says follow these safety rules:

• Monitor the NOAA Weather Radio. (You can also keep your television tuned to NBC Weather Plus on your local NBC affiliate for the latest weather information.)
• If flooding occurs, get to higher ground. Get out of areas subject to flooding. This includes canyons and washes.
• Avoid areas already flooded, especially if the water is flowing fast. Do not attempt to cross flowing streams.
• Never drive through flooded roadways.
• Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions. And be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.

Always remember when you see water-covered roadways: Turn Around, Don't Drown.
